JAIL FOR BLOCKING FINAL RITES IN TAMIL NADU.

On Sunday, the Tamil Nadu government passed an ordinance criminalizing the act of obstructing the burial or cremation of any patient who dies from a government-reported illness. Under this law, anyone found in violation will be liable to pay a fine and/or serve a minimum jail sentence of one-three years.

The state government said in a statement that the criminals would be booked under Section 74 of the 1939 Tamil Nadu Public Health Act. The decision to introduce this order came after two separate incidents in which local health staff and community employees were targeted for trying to bury the bodies of doctors who had died from Covid-19.
