Plasma therapy not approved treatment for Covid-19, can be dangerous, says Centre

The planet is reeling from the COVID-19 crisis and the weakest parts of our society are the most at risk. The Union health ministry on Tuesday advised against considering the plasma therapy to be a standard treatment for coronavirus and added that it should only be used for study and trial purposes till the time there's solid scientific evidence to support its efficacy.

The government added further that if not administered properly, plasma therapy could lead to life-threatening complications.

"There is no approved Covid-19 therapy in the country like plasma therapy. Plasma therapy is being tested and there is no evidence to support it as a treatment. It is only at an experimental stage. If not properly used, it can cause life-threatening complications," said Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary of Health.

The health ministry official said the top medical research body in the country was conducting a study to determine the effectiveness of plasma therapy and, until then, doctors are advised to use it for trial purposes only.

"Plasma therapy is to be used only for clinical and trial purposes before an ICMR report on its efficacy has been completed. ICMR is undertaking national clinical to test the efficacy of plasma therapy," he said.

The government's word of warning on plasma therapy comes at a time when many instances of it have been reported to aid in the recovery of patients infected with viruses. To date, plasma therapy has been used rarely, mainly in extreme cases where patients were assisted by ventilators.

The use of plasma therapy includes the injection into a healthy case of the blood component plasma collected from a healed coronavirus patient. A healed patient's plasma is known to hold virus-fighting antibodies that improve the response of the immune system to the illness. Plasma is the quasi-clear substance left behind after removing red and white blood cells and platelets from the blood.

Convalescent plasma therapy uses a blood portion called plasma, which includes the virus-fighting antibodies from people who have recovered from the infection to treat patients with Covid-19 who are critically ill.

Several Covid-19 combating medical care centers in India are claimed to have started banking plasma from patients recovered from coronavirus after its use has been claimed to have shown promising results.

A few days ago, Delhi health minister Satyendra Jain announced that after the plasma therapy was given six critical patients with coronavirus had "nearly recovered." On April 26, it was announced that Lilavati hospital in Mumbai, too, had named the first patient to undergo the therapy from Maharashtra.

One of the designated coronavirus hospitals in Delhi, Lok Nayak hospital is already using plasma therapy and it is stated that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is planning to start it for those with serious Covid-19 infections.
